PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee announced on Friday that the state has initiated legal action against 13 companies involved in the design, construction, and inspection of the Washington Bridge. This decision follows the bridge's partial shutdown in December due to safety concerns, which led to an independent review revealing significant structural deficiencies. McKee stated that the bridge, a vital link for Interstate 195 over the Seekonk River, will need to be demolished and replaced. The lawsuit aims to hold these companies accountable for their alleged failure to identify and report worsening structural issues that culminated in the bridge's unexpected closure. According to the state, there were multiple instances over the years where the companies did not adequately inform the Rhode Island Department of Transportation about the bridge's deteriorating condition. Attorney General Peter Neronha emphasized the economic impact of the closure, noting that the state has incurred substantial costs and will continue to do so during the rebuilding process. As the state prepares for the demolition and construction of a new bridge, traffic will be rerouted on the eastbound structure, affecting six lanes. The abrupt closure in December caused significant traffic disruptions, extending travel times from 40-45 minutes to several hours, and led to the temporary closure of some schools. The Washington Bridge is a critical infrastructure component, carrying nearly 100,000 vehicles daily.
