Ex-Palantir Exec Creates New Surveillance Tool for Police

Peregrine Technologies, founded by former Palantir executives, aims to improve local police departments' access to surveillance data while addressing potential abuses of technology. The company’s software has successfully integrated various data sources, including mobile locations, license plate information, and surveillance footage, to assist the San Pablo Police Department in identifying suspects at crime scenes. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of the software, developed after an 18-month collaboration with the police department. Since its inception, Peregrine has secured 57 contracts with various police and public safety agencies across the United States, experiencing significant growth with revenue tripling from $3 million to $10 million in 2023. The company’s technology is particularly beneficial for smaller agencies, making Real Time Crime Centers (RTCCs) more accessible. Beryl Lipton from the Electronic Frontier Foundation noted that this accessibility allows smaller departments to utilize surveillance feeds that were previously too expensive. To ensure responsible data use, Peregrine incorporates privacy and civil liberties protections into its contracts. Advisor Klein emphasizes the importance of embedding these considerations from the outset to prevent future complications. The company’s commitment to safeguarding sensitive data is reflected in its contract section titled “Protection of Privacy and Civil Liberties,” reminding law enforcement of their role as guardians of public information. Peregrine’s mission extends beyond providing tools; it seeks to empower local agencies to analyze urban data effectively, fostering a deeper understanding of crime patterns and contributing to community safety.
