Solar Boats Sail in Ecuador's Amazon

Kara Solar, a non-profit organization, has introduced solar-powered boats to the Achuar community in the Amazon, aiming to reduce reliance on gasoline-powered vessels that contribute to environmental degradation. Traditionally, Achuar people have depended on fuel transported from Quito, Ecuador, which is costly and increases carbon emissions. Angel Wasump, the organization's director and a member of the Achuar community, highlighted the negative impact of gasoline motors on local waterways, prompting a shift towards sustainable alternatives. The initiative began when entrepreneur Utne recognized the potential of solar technology to support the conservation of Achuar culture and territory. In collaboration with MIT and two Ecuadorian universities, he explored electric propulsion systems suitable for the Amazon. The solar boats can travel at speeds of up to 12 miles per hour and cover distances of 60 miles, providing a practical and eco-friendly transportation solution for the community. Utne emphasized that the boats are owned by the Achuar people, with Kara Solar serving as a support system. This project represents a reconnection to the core values of Achuar culture and a vision for sustainable development. Kara Solar also focuses on empowering the community through technical training, enabling Achuar technicians to install and maintain the solar technology in their native language. The initiative serves as a call to action for the global community, particularly youth, to recognize the importance of preserving the Amazon and supporting Indigenous peoples, as their well-being is intrinsically linked to the health of the planet.
