Germany hosts first hobby horsing championship in Frankfurt this weekend

This weekend, Frankfurt will host Germany's inaugural hobby horsing championship, featuring around 300 participants, primarily young riders, alongside approximately 20 adults. The event will take place in a gymnasium, attracting an audience of 1,500 spectators. Competitors will engage in various disciplines, including time jumping, style jumping, and dressage, showcasing their skills on wooden stick horses. The hobby horsing phenomenon has gained traction globally, with similar events recently held in the United States and Australia. Originating from Finland over two decades ago, hobby horsing has evolved from a grassroots movement into a popular sport, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which fueled its growth through social media. Julia Mikkonen, head of the Finnish Hobbyhorse Association, emphasizes the blend of Finnish craftsmanship and athleticism inherent in the sport. Riders often create and personalize their own hobby horses, adding a unique touch to their participation. The German Hobby Horsing Association, established just a year ago, aims to promote the sport and support its growing community. Kay Schumann, the association's president, highlights the importance of fostering a positive environment for riders, many of whom have faced online bullying and criticism regarding the legitimacy of their sport.
