PARIS (AP) — Snoop Dogg is set to take on the role of an Olympic torch bearer, a decision inspired by the emotional moment he witnessed Muhammad Ali lighting the cauldron at the 1996 Atlanta Games. As one of the final torch bearers before the opening ceremony on Friday, Snoop Dogg expressed the significance of this honor, recalling the impact of Ali's iconic moment despite his battle with Parkinson’s disease. "It was emotional for all of us to see the champ holding that torch," he remarked. The hip-hop star will carry the Olympic flame in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis, as confirmed by the town’s mayor, Mathieu Hanotin. Snoop Dogg emphasized his commitment to the occasion, stating, “I’m going to be on my best behavior... hold the torch with a smile on my face, because I realize how prestigious this event is.” His participation extends beyond the torch relay, as he will also serve as a prime-time correspondent for NBC during the Games. In preparation for the Olympics, Snoop Dogg has been actively engaging with athletes, meeting with track star Noah Lyles and participating in a 200-meter race. He clocked in at 34.44 seconds alongside NBC analyst Ato Boldon and former national champion Wallace Spearmon. Arriving in Paris ten days prior to the ceremony, he has visited various practice facilities, immersing himself in the athletes' stories and experiences.
