Lebanese-American Artist Explores Nature and Space in Art

In a recent interview, a Lebanese artist discussed how his heritage profoundly influences his work. Born in Beirut and raised in Cairo, he spent summers in the Lebanese mountains, where he developed a deep appreciation for the region's archeology and natural beauty. After relocating to New York, he found a vibrant art community that facilitated his creative journey. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to Lebanon, where he felt more at ease and began producing a significant body of work in his large atelier. The artist recounted his first return to Lebanon in 1993, where he contemplated becoming a landscape painter. However, it wasn't until 2006 that he began incorporating trees into his artwork, initially shocking viewers with his unconventional approach. Over time, his style gained acceptance, and he noted that a few other artists have since adopted similar techniques. His work often features olive trees, which he finds particularly compelling due to their historical significance and resilience amidst adversity. He expressed a fascination with the connection between ancient objects and contemporary life, emphasizing the importance of the living trees in his art. The artist also shared insights into his creative process, revealing that he experimented with color and texture, utilizing crushed pumice mixed with acrylic paint to enhance his pieces. This innovative approach reflects his desire to bridge the past with the present, creating a dialogue between history and modernity in his work.
