Story

MANKATO, Minn. — A Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster recovery center is set to open on Wednesday in Mankato, a city severely affected by storms and flooding in June. The center will provide residents with access to FEMA specialists, state officials, and representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration, who will assist with applications for federal disaster assistance and address any inquiries. The flooding in June had a widespread impact across nearly half of Minnesota, with over 20 river gauges in the Upper Midwest reaching major flood stages due to relentless rainfall. The severe weather caused significant damage, including the collapse of a section of the 114-year-old Rapidan Dam, as well as destruction to nearby homes and businesses. Many residents in southern Minnesota, particularly in Mankato, experienced flooded basements and property damage. Last week, FEMA opened a recovery center in Waterville, another area heavily impacted by the floods. Agents there engaged with homeowners, business owners, and renters to assess their eligibility for federal assistance. However, some residents expressed disappointment upon learning that secondary homes do not qualify for FEMA disaster grants. The new recovery center will be located at the Blue Earth County Justice Center on 401 Carver Road and will operate daily from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., providing crucial support to those affected by the recent natural disaster.
