The British automotive landscape is set to welcome new players, as Changan, a prominent Chinese car manufacturer, gears up for market entry with a lineup of electric vehicles. With a dedicated research and development base established in Birmingham that includes over a hundred engineers, Changan is emphasizing its commitment to the UK market. This base will facilitate the creation of cars tailored to British consumers, showcasing a blend of British engineering, Italian design, and Chinese production. Initially, Changan will introduce two electric SUVs—the Deepal S07 and S05—in 2025, designed to compete with established brands like Tesla and Kia. Changan's Deepal S07 will stand out in the all-electric vehicle segment with its anticipated pricing of £39,995 and features an 80kWh battery that offers a maximum range of 295 miles. The performance specifications include a 214bhp electric motor powering the rear wheels, promising a swift acceleration from zero to 60 mph in just 7.6 seconds. Although the fast charging capability may not be the most competitive at 93kW, it will provide convenience for consumers expecting quick charging times. In terms of luxury and technology, the Deepal S07 is designed with a focus on simplicity and comfort. It encompasses high-end materials, a spacious interior with 28 storage compartments, and advanced features such as a 15.6-inch touchscreen equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, it offers unique elements like a rear touchscreen for passengers and an augmented-reality head-up display. The commitment to safety is evident with a certification of five stars from Euro NCAP, which positions it favorably for safety-conscious consumers. Changan also has plans to expand its presence in the UK market significantly. By the end of this year, the company expects to establish a network of 60 dealers across the country, aiming to make these new electric vehicles widely available. The Deepal S05, which will be slightly smaller than the S07, is expected to follow the S07 and compete in the burgeoning electric SUV sector against contenders like Kia's EV3. In total, Changan aims to have eight new models, including all-electric and plug-in hybrids, available in the UK by 2027, reflecting a calculated effort to establish a strong foothold in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle market in Europe.
