Firecracker factory blast in Thoothukudi kills several, CM announces aid

On Saturday evening, around 5.30 pm, a tragic explosion occurred at the Sivashakthi Fireworks factory in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, resulting in the deaths of two workers, Muthukannan (21) and Vijay (25). The blast also left four individuals injured, including Selvam (21), Prashanth (20), Sendhurkani (45), and Muthumari (41), who are currently receiving treatment at Sathankulam Government Hospital. The factory was storing firecrackers intended for weddings and temple festivals, which contributed to the severity of the explosion. In response to the incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He announced an ex gratia payment of Rs three lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs one lakh for each of the injured individuals. This financial assistance is part of the Chief Minister's general relief fund aimed at providing support to those affected by such tragedies. The explosion has raised concerns regarding safety regulations in firecracker manufacturing facilities, especially given the recent similar incident in Dindigul district, where two individuals also lost their lives due to an explosion at a firecracker factory. Such occurrences highlight the need for stricter enforcement of safety measures to prevent future accidents. The local community is mourning the loss of the victims, and the government is expected to conduct an investigation into the cause of the explosion.
