Explore Mechelen’s Burgundian Past with Virtual Reality Experience

Mechelen has launched an innovative project aimed at immersing visitors in its rich 14th and 15th-century history, particularly during the Burgundian Netherlands era. This initiative, organized by the local tourist office, utilizes modern technology such as virtual and augmented reality, alongside interactive exhibits and guided tours featuring actors in period costumes. The goal is to create an engaging and educational experience that highlights daily life in Mechelen under the Dukes of Burgundy. Visitors can explore virtual reconstructions of historical streets and buildings, interact with displays that showcase significant events, and follow designated walking routes with informative panels. The project also includes workshops, replica artifacts, and special routes through key historical sites, all designed to celebrate the city’s cultural and political significance during the Burgundian period. Alderman for Tourism, Björn Siffer, emphasizes the importance of blending modern technology with traditional storytelling to enhance visitor engagement. The activities are centered around St. Rumbold’s Tower in Grote Mark, where augmented reality experiences allow guests to visualize life in medieval Mechelen. Additionally, a one-and-a-half-hour listening walk features local storytellers sharing narratives that deepen the understanding of the city’s past. The initiative aims to make history accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities, by providing Braille displays, sign language storytelling, and Google Maps guides for easier navigation. Mayor Bart Somers expresses a commitment to ensuring that all visitors can enjoy and appreciate Mechelen’s historical heritage.
