Ukrainian Women in the UK Weave Camouflage Nets for Their Army
- Ukrainian women living in Newcastle are engaged in weaving camouflage nets for the Ukrainian army.
- This initiative not only supports the military effort but also helps these women combat loneliness in their new environment.
- The project fosters a sense of community among the participants while contributing to their homeland's defense.
A dedicated group of Ukrainian women residing in the UK is making a significant contribution to their homeland's military efforts by weaving camouflage nets. Since the onset of the war with Russia in 2022, the Newcastle Ukrainian community has been actively involved in this initiative, with all completed nets being sent to the front lines. For many of these women, who are often beyond retirement age, these gatherings serve as a vital opportunity to socialize and alleviate feelings of loneliness. Nataliya Sloutenko, who relocated from Kyiv last year, expressed her gratitude for being able to support Ukrainian soldiers through this project. The weaving sessions not only allow the women to engage in meaningful work but also provide a space to converse in their native language, sing traditional songs, and share Ukrainian cuisine. "It unites us as we speak our language here," Sloutenko noted, emphasizing the importance of community in their efforts to aid the war effort. Lesya Bourn, an organizer of the meetings at Newcastle's Polish Centre, highlighted the dual significance of the project. She stated, "Everyone is on their own front line and our front line is here," underscoring how these gatherings help participants momentarily escape the harsh realities of the conflict back home. The initiative fosters a sense of belonging and purpose among the women, reinforcing their connection to Ukraine while they support their troops from afar.
