Story

The Futureheads, a British rock band, have garnered acclaim for their cover of Kate Bush’s classic track "Hounds of Love," which is often hailed as one of the best renditions of the song. Barry Hyde, the band's frontman, shared insights into the origins of their cover, which was inspired by a compilation cassette provided by bassist David "Jaff" Craig. The idea to cover the song emerged from a friendly rivalry with another band, leading to the band recording their version out of "jovial spitefulness." The Futureheads debuted their cover during a performance at the Head of Steam in Newcastle, and it has since become a staple of their live shows, with Barry estimating they have played it over 1,500 times. The single received significant recognition, including being named NME's song of the year in 2005. "Hounds of Love" was featured on the band's self-titled debut album, which included 15 tracks that showcased their energetic sound. Reflecting on their musical journey, Barry noted the band's early days spent in soundproof rehearsal rooms, where they could experiment with their sound for a modest fee. He also discussed the evolution of his vocal style, revealing that he initially attempted to sing in an American accent before embracing his authentic Mackem accent, which he now proudly showcases. When asked about the possibility of covering more of Bush's work, Barry revealed that the idea has been floated within the band, hinting at their ongoing admiration for the iconic artist.
