An Uber driver was violently attacked by a passenger during a ride in New York City's Upper East Side on Sunday night, according to police reports. The 42-year-old driver was transporting the suspect on East 62nd Street near York Avenue around 10:30 p.m. when the passenger suddenly became aggressive. Witnesses reported that the assailant punched the driver and slashed his face with a metal object, although the motive for the attack remains unclear. The assault escalated as the suspect choked the driver before fleeing the scene towards the East River. The driver sustained significant injuries, including facial cuts, swelling, and bleeding. As of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests had been made in connection with the incident. An Uber representative condemned the violence, stating that the rider has been banned from the platform and that the company is cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation. The city's Taxi and Limousine Commission also expressed outrage over the attack, with Commissioner David Do labeling such violence against drivers as "unconscionable and intolerable." This incident follows another recent attack on an Uber driver in the same area, where a woman allegedly used pepper spray on her driver, reportedly motivated by racial bias. The driver in that case claimed the attack was racially charged, leading to the suspect's arrest and subsequent release.
