Ohio Mandates AEDs in Schools and Sports Venues Following Damar Hamlin Incident

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A new law in Ohio mandates the installation of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) in nearly all schools and sports venues across the state. This legislative change was inspired by the cardiac arrest incident involving Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin during a nationally televised game in Cincinnati last year. Hamlin expressed his gratitude towards the state Legislature and Governor Mike DeWine for their efforts to enhance safety in environments where young people learn and compete. The legislation, signed by Governor DeWine, requires public schools, municipally-owned sports facilities, and certain private schools to have AEDs readily available on-site. Previously, Ohio law allowed school districts the option to implement AEDs, but it was not a requirement. The new law aims to ensure that all educational and recreational venues are better equipped to handle cardiac emergencies, thereby increasing the chances of survival for affected individuals. In addition to the AED requirement, the law stipulates that staff members must receive training on how to operate the devices and recognize the signs of cardiac arrest. Furthermore, schools are mandated to conduct informational sessions for students about sudden cardiac arrest prior to the start of athletic seasons. The Ohio Department of Health is tasked with creating a model emergency action plan to guide schools and sports organizations in the effective use of AEDs. This proactive measure is seen as a significant step towards improving the safety and preparedness of Ohio's youth in the face of potential cardiac emergencies.
