Reform UK Expands Presence in Wales with New Councillors
- Lee Anderson sends a blunt message to Keir Starmer
- Reform UK will contest seats in the Senedd in 2026 elections
- A political clash is in the making for the upcoming elections
In a bold move, Reform UK has welcomed three former Labour councillors into its ranks, signaling a growing challenge to the Labour Party in Wales. Lee Anderson, the party's chief whip, expressed confidence in the party's trajectory, stating, “We’re coming to get rid of Labour.” The new members, David Thomas and Alan Slade, previously served on Torfaen County Borough Council until 2019, while Jason O’Connell was elected as an independent last year. This development marks Reform UK's first council group in Wales. The party's recent performance in the general election has bolstered its momentum, achieving second place in 14 constituencies and capturing 16 percent of the Welsh vote share, a significant increase from 2019. Anderson emphasized that more individuals are recognizing the potential of Reform UK as a means to improve the political landscape, particularly with the next Senedd election approaching in under two years. He asserted that the party would actively contest every vote against the established parties. In a joint statement, the newly joined councillors articulated their decision to align with Reform UK, citing a shared commitment to the values and priorities that resonate with their constituents. They expressed confidence that this partnership would enhance their ability to fulfill the promises made to voters. Anderson further remarked on the nature of local politics, suggesting that it should transcend traditional party affiliations.
