Mayor Khan Advocates for Expedited Investigations into Child Fatalities in Traffic Incidents

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is set to urge senior leaders within the Metropolitan Police to expedite investigations into traffic collisions resulting in child fatalities. This decision follows a meeting with the families of Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, two eight-year-olds who tragically lost their lives in a collision involving a Land Rover at the Study Prep School in Wimbledon last year. The meeting took place at City Hall, where the families expressed their frustrations regarding the lengthy investigation process, which took nearly a year before concluding that no charges would be filed against the driver, who suffered an epileptic seizure at the time of the incident. During the meeting, Trevor Sterling, a lawyer representing multiple families affected by the crash, raised concerns about the police's handling of the case. He emphasized the need for a tailored approach to investigations involving child fatalities, arguing against a "one size fits all" methodology. Khan acknowledged Sterling's suggestions and expressed his intent to explore the possibility of implementing a more expedited protocol for such investigations, aiming to prevent other families from enduring similar hardships. Sterling highlighted that any changes made would serve as a legacy for Nuria and Selena, ensuring that future cases are handled with greater urgency and sensitivity. A spokesperson for Khan reiterated the mayor's deep sorrow over the girls' deaths and confirmed that both he and Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Sophie Linden, have engaged with the families to address their concerns.
