Marks & Spencer returns to Spain with new store openings
- Marks & Spencer is returning to Madrid with a new clothing and beauty store in La Vaguada shopping center.
- This marks the company's first presence in Madrid since it closed its Spanish stores in 2001.
- The new stores aim to drive growth in Spain by leveraging the M&S brand and catering to local demand.
In 2024, Marks & Spencer, a well-known British retailer, is making a significant comeback to Spain, specifically in Madrid, after a hiatus of 23 years. The retailer previously exited the Spanish capital in 2001 as part of a broader restructuring that saw it close all its stores across the country. This decision came at a time when the company was facing various challenges in international markets and sought to concentrate its resources on more profitable regions. The reopening in Madrid, located in the La Vaguada shopping center, reflects a renewed interest in the Spanish market driven by economic growth, lower rental costs, and a resurgence in demand for physical retail experiences. Marks & Spencer is also planning to expand further into southern Spain with a new store in Granada. This new location is set to cater to a diverse customer base by offering a full range of clothing and beauty products for men and women, including lingerie. The expansion in Spain is being managed by Marbella Fashion Store, an established franchisee that already operates M&S locations in Marbella. The strategic move is aimed at leveraging the existing strength of the M&S brand in the UK to fuel growth in the Spanish market. Mark Lemming, the company's managing director of international operations, emphasized that these new store openings are seen as a key component for future growth, allowing the company to tap into the local market while reinforcing its brand presence.
