Czech Republic mandates biometric passports for Russian citizens amid security concerns

European nations are increasingly alarmed by Russia's hybrid warfare tactics, particularly in response to NATO's support for Ukraine. The Czech Republic, a strong supporter of Ukraine, has become a target for Russian malign activities, prompting it to implement a biometric passport requirement for Russian citizens in July. This measure aims to enhance security by ensuring that individuals entering the country can be accurately identified through biometric data, such as facial recognition and fingerprints. The Czech government justified this requirement by referencing past incidents involving Russian operatives, including the Vrbetice ammunition depot explosion that resulted in fatalities. Additionally, there have been concerns about Russian espionage, as evidenced by the deportation of 18 Russian spies from the Czech Republic.
