Story

UPPER CHICHESTER, Pa. (CBS) — As the first day of school approaches, families are rushing to gather last-minute supplies. The National Retail Federation (NRF) reports that parents of K-12 students are expected to spend an average of $875 on school essentials this year, a slight decrease from last year's record high of $890. This decline reflects the ongoing economic pressures that families are facing. Local parents are feeling the pinch of rising prices. Dante Shepherd, a landscaper, has been working extra hours to afford supplies for his 8-year-old daughter at Marcus Hook Elementary School. He noted that the increasing costs are largely due to the declining value of the dollar. Similarly, Curtiss Robinson, a father of seven, expressed concern over the financial burden of back-to-school shopping, highlighting the significant expenses involved. The NRF anticipates that total back-to-school spending will reach a staggering $39 billion this year, underscoring the financial strain on families. In response to the challenges faced by some, community members are stepping up to help. Grandmother Donna Cimabue has taken the initiative to donate $154 worth of supplies to families in need, hoping to alleviate some of the pressure on parents struggling to provide for their children. As the school year begins, the combination of rising costs and community support illustrates the challenges and resilience of families preparing for a new academic year.
