Toyota joins V8 Supercars in 2026 with star drivers

In a significant development for Australian motorsport, Toyota will join the Supercars championship in 2026, marking its first entry since 2019. The company has kept this decision under wraps for over a year and a half, despite ongoing speculation about its participation. Toyota plans to debut a redesigned GR Supra featuring a five-litre V8 engine, with a full-sized model to be showcased at the Bathurst 1000 race next month. Toyota Australia aims to field four vehicles in the championship and has committed to a minimum five-year participation. The announcement was made by Sean Hanley, Toyota's sales and marketing vice-president, who expressed that the company has contemplated entering the series for over two decades. The decision reflects a long-held ambition to compete alongside established brands like Ford and General Motors. Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood, driving for Walkinshaw Andretti United, will pilot two of the Supras, with WAU director Ryan Walkinshaw calling it a monumental moment for the team. The entry of Toyota is expected to elevate the competition, as Supercars CEO Shane Howard noted that having three major global brands competing will attract attention from racing fans worldwide. This move comes after Nissan's exit from the series in 2019, making Toyota the third manufacturer in the championship.
