Key media groups withdraw from Slovak freedom platform over disinformation link

The Investigative Centre of Jan Kuciak (ICJK) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) have announced their withdrawal from Slovakia's state-run press freedom platform due to the controversial nomination of Dominik Papala, who is associated with a disinformation-spreading media outlet. This decision was communicated in an open letter to Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová, expressing serious concerns about the implications of this nomination on the platform's integrity and effectiveness. The platform, which was established to promote press freedom and protect journalists, has been under scrutiny since the new government led by Robert Fico took office in October 2023. Fico's administration has been known for its hostile stance towards the media, often labeling it as an enemy. This environment has raised alarms about the future of press freedom in Slovakia, especially in light of the platform's role in upholding international commitments related to media rights. In July, five members of the platform had previously requested a reconsideration of Papala's nomination, but their appeal was dismissed. The ICJK and RSF's decision to suspend their participation reflects a broader concern about the government's influence over media institutions and the potential erosion of democratic dialogue. Both organizations emphasized their commitment to engaging with democratic institutions, but they also highlighted the necessity of maintaining the integrity of such dialogues.
