S&D call for global standards to curb big tech’s power

The group has pointed to specific incidents, such as violent riots in the UK and Elon Musk's defiance of Brazilian court orders, as evidence of how disinformation can incite political unrest. These examples illustrate the pressing need for social media companies to be held accountable for their role in disseminating false information. The S&D has called for the EU to align its efforts with the UN's recommendations to address these challenges. The Digital Services Act, adopted in 2022, represents a significant step towards regulating online platforms and ensuring that illegal activities are addressed in the digital space. While enforcement of the DSA is still in its early stages, there are ongoing discussions aimed at enhancing its effectiveness in protecting democratic values and addressing mental health issues related to social media use. The S&D's advocacy for global standards reflects a broader geopolitical interest in safeguarding democracies worldwide, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in tackling the challenges posed by social media platforms.
