Slovenia Establishes Emergency Housing for Disasters

Ljubljana's Administration for Protection and Rescue is advancing its efforts under the European project rescEU by establishing temporary accommodations for 250 individuals in response to natural disasters. This initiative, which began last year, aims to enhance self-sufficiency and operational capacity across Europe and beyond. The accommodations will include essential facilities such as sanitary blocks, multifunctional spaces, and logistics management areas, ensuring a swift and effective response to emergencies. The project encompasses not only the construction of temporary housing but also the procurement of necessary materials and equipment. More than a hundred living containers have already been acquired, with plans to purchase additional sanitary facilities and non-food items. The initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes assembling a Civil Protection unit for effective management and conducting training exercises to prepare for potential disasters. In collaboration with other European nations, including Croatia, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey, the rescEU project collectively provides temporary accommodation for up to 9,000 people. The European Commission will oversee the deployment of equipment and personnel to assist affected countries as needed, reinforcing the collaborative approach to disaster response. Additionally, the Administration is nearing completion of a national center for wildfires in Sežana, near the Italian border, as part of Slovenia's recovery and resilience plan. Future plans also include establishing a national protection and rescue center and a dedicated flood center to further bolster the country's disaster preparedness capabilities.
