Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — In a preseason opener marked by injuries and a scuffle, the New York Giants defeated the Detroit Lions 14-3 on Thursday night. Tommy DeVito stepped in for the injured Drew Lock late in the first quarter, leading the Giants on two scoring drives in the first half. Lock, who struggled with 4 completions on 10 attempts for 17 yards, sustained a hip injury and did not return to the game. DeVito, an undrafted free agent who gained local fame last season, connected with running back Eric Gray for a pivotal 24-yard swing pass that ignited a 91-yard touchdown drive. Gray capped the drive with a 48-yard run, showcasing impressive agility. He later added a 1-yard touchdown run, contributing significantly to the Giants' lead. DeVito completed 8 of 15 passes for 92 yards, while Gray rushed for 52 yards on four carries. On the Lions' side, Nate Sudfeld started but struggled, finishing 13 of 24 for 96 yards and an interception. Former Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker took over in the second half, completing 5 of 9 passes for 36 yards and adding 34 rushing yards. The game was marred by a brawl, leading to both teams being fined $200,000 each. In special teams, Lions kicker Bates had a mixed performance, successfully kicking a 53-yard field goal but failing to place the ensuing kickoff properly, giving the Giants advantageous field position.
