Story

Special counsel David Weiss has requested a judge's approval for an immunity arrangement for Hallie Biden, the sister-in-law of Hunter Biden, as part of preparations for Hunter's upcoming tax trial. In court documents filed on Wednesday, Weiss informed Judge Mark Scarsi that the Department of Justice's Tax Division supports granting immunity to both Hallie Biden and her sister, Elizabeth Secundy, to compel their testimony against Hunter Biden, who faces nine tax charges. Both women have indicated they would invoke their Fifth Amendment rights if not granted immunity. Hallie Biden previously testified under a similar immunity arrangement in Hunter Biden's Delaware trial, where she revealed that he had introduced her to crack cocaine and that she disposed of his firearm out of concern for his safety. Her testimony contributed to Hunter Biden's conviction on three charges related to gun possession. The current tax case against Hunter Biden is more extensive, alleging he failed to pay over $1.4 million in taxes from 2017 to 2020, while living extravagantly off income from foreign business ventures. In response to the prosecution's requests, Hunter Biden's defense attorneys have sought to exclude references to his lifestyle and his discharge from the Navy due to a drug test failure. Additionally, prosecutors aim to prevent Hunter Biden from using the defense that he relied on the advice of his attorney, Kevin Morris, when filing allegedly false tax returns. Morris, a close confidante, has been financially supporting Hunter since 2020.
