Google Launches Gemini Live, Competing with ChatGPT
- Google introduces Gemini Live to compete with ChatGPT.
- Gemini Live is Google's response to ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode.
- Gemini Live rollout follows months after its initial announcement.
Google has officially launched Gemini Live, its response to OpenAI's recently introduced Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT. Announced at the I/O 2024 developer conference, Gemini Live allows users to engage in conversations using the Gemini app, featuring ten new natural-sounding voices. Users can interact with the app even when their phones are locked, and conversations can be paused and resumed at will. Google suggests practical applications, such as practicing for job interviews, where Gemini Live can provide speaking tips and highlight skills to emphasize. One of the standout features of Gemini Live is its enhanced memory capabilities, attributed to the underlying architecture of the Gemini 1.5 Pro and Gemini 1.5 Flash models. This design allows for a longer-than-average "context window," enabling the AI to process extensive data from ongoing conversations before generating responses. However, it is important to note that Gemini Live currently lacks the multimodal input capabilities showcased at the I/O event. Initially available only in English, Gemini Live is set to expand to additional languages and iOS later this year. The service is not free, and Android users will soon be able to access Gemini's overlay on any app, allowing them to ask questions about on-screen content. Additionally, Gemini will have the ability to generate images directly from the overlay, enhancing its integration with Google services and providing users with new ways to interact with their devices.
