On September 9, 2025, Eco Wave Power initiated a groundbreaking project at the Port of Los Angeles aimed at transforming ocean waves into renewable energy. Eight blue steel floats, resembling small boats, were deployed in a channel at the port, attached to an unused wharf. This deployment is significant as it represents a step toward harnessing ocean wave power and demonstrates the potential for renewable energy generation at existing port infrastructure. The objective of this project is not only to produce electricity for local use but also to showcase that wave energy technology can be effective and environmentally friendly. Inna Braverman, the founder and CEO of Eco Wave Power, established the company in 2011 with a vision to convert the natural potency of ocean waves into clean electricity. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the waves along the coasts of the United States possess enough energy potential to meet approximately one-third of the country’s electricity needs. This highlights the immense possibility that wave energy holds in contributing to the country’s renewable energy goals. The technical mechanism of the project involves floats that bob on the water surface, driving a cylinder that circulates a biodegradable hydraulic fluid through a piping system into storage tanks. As pressure builds within these tanks, it activates a motor that powers a generator to produce clean electricity. This technological approach exemplifies a practical utilization of wave energy and aims to further validate its viability for broader applications. Braverman emphasized that this pilot project constitutes a remarkable milestone, reinforcing the idea that wave energy can be effectively integrated along existing marine structures without causing harm to the oceanic environment. Furthermore, the project aims to stimulate local economic development by employing nearby subcontractors in its design and construction phases. This local engagement reflects a growing trend where renewable energy initiatives not only focus on clean energy outputs but also support community infrastructure and job creation.
