ITBP establishes new bases to counter Naxal presence in Chhattisgarh

In Chhattisgarh, during early 2025, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) took significant steps by establishing new Coy Operating Bases (COBs) in Narayanpur district. The region, long known for Naxal activity, posed challenges due to its mountainous terrain and strong Naxal influence. The establishment of these COBs marks a strategic development in countering the Naxal threat and restoring order in an area long regarded as a stronghold for these groups. The establishment includes five new COBs since the beginning of the year, which plays a crucial role in enhancing the security forces' operational capabilities. The ITBP, deployed in Chhattisgarh since 2009, set its sights on Narayanpur and surrounding districts to combat the Naxal insurgency more effectively. Reports indicate that over 100 individuals linked to Naxal groups, including active cadre members and supporters, have surrendered to the ITBP and local police. This overwhelming response suggests a shift in local sentiment, driven by an increasing faith in the capabilities of the Indian security forces to restore normalcy and develop the region. The first quarter of 2025 has seen the fastest establishment of COBs by security forces in a high-intensity Naxal area, signifying a turning point in the campaign against Left Wing extremism in central India. The strategic opening of the road network between Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, accompanied by the establishment of these COBs, is a movement towards dismantling the logistic and operational capabilities of the Naxals. This infrastructure improvement aligns with broader national projects, like the Bharatmala initiative aimed at improving highway connectivity throughout India. The realization of such projects, previously held back due to security concerns, is indicative of the ITBP's achievements in the heart of Naxal territory and promises a more secure environment for developmental projects moving forward.
