- The lawmakers emphasized the need for accountability among faculty and students involved in the protest on a taxpayer-funded campus.
In recent weeks, New York City Councilmembers Inna Vernikov and Kalman Yeger have called for an investigation into Corinna Mullin, an adjunct political science professor at CUNY, following her alleged involvement in a destructive anti-Israel protest at the City College of New York. This protest, which took place at the Harlem campus on April 30, resulted in violent altercations and significant damage, reportedly amounting to over $3 million. Approximately 170 protesters were arrested during the event, including Mullin, who has been linked to the group Students for Justice in Palestine. The councilmembers, both of whom are Jewish, expressed their concerns in a letter to CUNY Chancellor Felix Matos Rodriguez, demanding accountability for those responsible for the chaos and violence that occurred during the protest. They claimed to have credible information pointing to Mullin as one of the protest’s ringleaders and stressed the importance of holding students and faculty accountable for their actions on a taxpayer-funded campus. The issue of antisemitism on CUNY campuses has been a contentious topic, highlighted during a City Council higher education committee hearing that took place just before the councilmembers' letter. Mullin's attorney has denied the allegations against her, arguing that the protests were peaceful and asserting that the claims made by the councilmembers are False and defamatory.
