Congress Picks Abhishek Manu Singhvi for Telangana Rajya Sabha Bypoll
- Congress names Abhishek Manu Singhvi as candidate for Telangana Rajya Sabha Bypoll.
- The nomination follows the resignation of Keshava Rao.
- Congress President Kharge approves Singhvi's candidature for the bye-election.
New Delhi, August 14: The Congress party has officially nominated Abhishek Manu Singhvi as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha bypoll in Telangana. This announcement was made by Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, who confirmed that the party's President, Mallikarjun Kharge, has approved Singhvi's candidacy for the Council of States election. Singhvi's nomination comes after a setback earlier this year when he lost the Rajya Sabha elections in Himachal Pradesh. The Election Commission of India has scheduled the polling for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat in Telangana on September 3. This bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of former BRS MP K Keshava Rao, who recently rejoined the Congress party. Keshava Rao, a former chief of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership on July 4. He had previously switched allegiance to the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), formerly known as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), in 2013. His return to Congress marks a significant political shift, as he had been away from the party for over a decade. The upcoming bypoll is crucial for the Congress party as it seeks to strengthen its presence in the Rajya Sabha, especially following recent electoral challenges. Singhvi's candidacy is seen as a strategic move to reclaim influence in Telangana's political landscape.
