Story

A lawsuit has been filed against Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg by the conservative group America First Legal (AFL), alleging that Bragg's office unlawfully withheld records related to the felony hush money case involving former President Donald Trump. The complaint stems from Bragg's repeated denials of AFL's Freedom of Information Law requests, which sought communications between his office, the Biden administration, and other parties that AFL claims are part of a "partisan persecution" against Trump, the Republican presidential nominee. AFL Vice President Daniel Epstein emphasized the importance of transparency, stating, “There should be nothing to hide.” The group initiated its investigation in March 2023, focusing on communications within the district attorney’s office regarding Trump. Their requests included records of interactions with notable figures, such as Lanny Davis, a Democratic consultant who previously claimed to have influenced the investigation into Trump. The lawsuit comes after a jury found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records to conceal a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump is scheduled for sentencing on September 18, while the court considers the implications of a Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity. AFL contends that Bragg's office has only provided a single-page document citing various exemptions and claims that the requests were overly broad. The legal action seeks to compel the release of the requested records and demands a more thorough search for documents, along with detailed justifications for any withheld information. The Washington Examiner has reached out to Bragg’s office for a response.
