Durango police chase down rogue kangaroo once more

In Durango, Colorado, on Monday, police were called out again to deal with a loose kangaroo, a unique situation that has become almost routine for the local law enforcement. The kangaroo, named Irwin, had previously gained notoriety in October 2024 for escaping and creating a high-speed chase scenario, which had garnered substantial media attention. This recent incident raised concern among the residents, as a caller reported that the kangaroo was likely to be in danger of being hit by a vehicle. As a relatively young kangaroo, Irwin had outgrown some of the techniques used previously for capturing him, such as being lured into a bag, which was similar to a mother kangaroo's pouch. This time, officers had to strategize effectively to safely capture the now larger animal. Officer Shane Garrison, noted for his experience with animals, managed to corner Irwin in a backyard after pursuing him into an alley. Garrison’s background allowed him to successfully approach the kangaroo and secure it without incident. After catching Irwin, the officers placed the kangaroo in the back of a police vehicle to ensure that he was safely returned home, this time to the city center in Durango, which is known for its vibrant tourism and outdoor activities. Kangaroos are among the unusual pets permitted in Colorado, and as Irwin grows, he poses additional challenges. Police Commander Nick Stasi noted that while they successfully captured Irwin once again, kangaroo owners must take responsibility to ensure their pets do not escape, especially as kangaroos can become significantly larger and harder to manage with age. The Durango Police Department has reiterated the importance of responsible pet ownership for exotic animals, recognizing that as the kangaroo matures, it will require different handling techniques and greater precautions to avoid future escapades.
