When officers approached the vehicle, they instructed the driver, Yussuf Mohamed Mire, to turn off the engine and exit the car. Instead, Mire accelerated, mounting the pavement crowded with New Year revelers and performing a dangerous U-turn in an attempt to evade capture. As officers pursued him on foot, one attempted to pull Mire from the vehicle, but he reversed into the officers, knocking them aside. He then fled through a pedestrianized area, ultimately abandoning the car and taking a taxi back to London. Four days later, police located and arrested Mire, who was charged with dangerous driving. During the court proceedings, Mire pleaded guilty to the charges against him. The court sentenced him to 12 months in prison and disqualified him from driving for 18 months. Fortunately, the officers involved did not sustain serious injuries, but the incident highlighted the potential dangers posed by reckless driving in crowded areas.
