Sheffield Students Start Music Label for New Artists

A new student-run record label, Octagon Records, has been established at the University of Sheffield, aiming to support aspiring musicians in navigating the music industry while honing their professional skills. The initiative offers a range of opportunities, including masterclasses, production trips, and regular open-mic nights, designed to foster creativity and collaboration among student artists. Musician Leo Howard-Cofield, who recently showcased his talent at the Tramlines Festival, emphasized the importance of Octagon Records in motivating young artists. He noted the challenges students face in gaining visibility as musicians and highlighted the label's role in providing essential support for recording, releasing, and performing music. Howard-Cofield stated, “The leg-up they provide into the world of music is vital to keeping young musicians creating and keeping them inspired.” Octagon Records, while backed by the university's music department, is open to all students, regardless of their field of study. Since its inception in September, the label has formed partnerships with notable organizations, including independent label Hudson Records, Tramlines Festival, and retail giant HMV, enhancing its reach and resources. Mia Sedgwick, a member of the student committee, expressed that Octagon Records empowers students to pursue their passions alongside their academic commitments. She underscored the significance of such projects in today’s competitive music landscape, stating that the experience gained through the label is invaluable for future employability in the industry.
