Researchers capture first footage of rare baby colossal squid

In a remarkable discovery, researchers from the Schmidt Ocean Institute have captured footage of a baby colossal squid in the Atlantic Ocean. This important finding occurred off the coast of the South Sandwich Islands, where the team was exploring for new marine life. Characterized by its impressive size, the juvenile squid measures approximately one foot in length and was found at a depth of 1,968 feet. Colossal squids, scientifically known as Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, are recognized as the largest invertebrates on the planet, with fully grown adults reaching up to 23 feet long, roughly the length of a small fire truck. The species is renowned not only for its size but also for possessing the largest eyes of any animal, surpassing even those of the great whales.
