- The successful bust highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Bulgaria.
SOFIA, Bulgaria — In a significant drug bust, Bulgarian authorities have confiscated approximately 436 kilograms (960 pounds) of heroin at the Black Sea port of Burgas, according to the district prosecutor’s office. The heroin, concealed in 434 packages within a trailer, is valued at an estimated 35 million euros (nearly $38 million). The trailer had arrived in late July, having traveled from Kyrgyzstan to the Georgian port of Batumi before crossing into Bulgaria. The cargo, which was purportedly transporting cable-laying machines, drew attention due to its prolonged stay at the port. Ivan Sokolov, chief of the anti-drug unit, reported that an X-ray inspection of the trailer led to the discovery of the hidden narcotics. The trailer was intended to continue its journey to Alexandroupolis in Greece after its stop in Burgas. Despite the scale of the operation, no arrests have been made, and authorities have yet to identify individuals involved in this cross-border drug trafficking case. District prosecutor Georgi Chinev confirmed the ongoing investigation but noted the absence of suspects at this stage. In Bulgaria, a conviction for drug trafficking can result in a prison sentence of up to 20 years. Bulgaria, strategically located on a drug route from the Middle East to Western Europe, has intensified its efforts in recent years to combat drug trafficking and enhance border security.
