Berwick to host 1930s LS Lowry painting recreation event

A unique event is set to take place in Berwick-upon-Tweed on September 6, 2023, where locals are encouraged to dress in attire reminiscent of characters from an LS Lowry painting created in 1938. This initiative aims to celebrate the ongoing exhibition of Lowry's work at the Maltings Arts Centre, which has garnered significant attention and success. Jonathan Macfarlane, who operates ROJO Antiques on Bridge Street, spearheaded the idea following a previous successful event that encouraged colorful clothing. Participants are invited to don coats, bowler hats, and even bring dogs, reflecting the lively crowds depicted in Lowry's artwork. James Lowther, head of visual arts for the Maltings Trust, emphasized the importance of this event in enhancing public awareness of Lowry's ties to Berwick.
