PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – At the Wells Fargo Center, the Philadelphia 76ers' home games feature a vibrant drumline that has become a symbol of hope and community engagement. Led by the passionate Mapp, the initiative aims to divert youth from violence by encouraging them to embrace music instead of guns. Mapp, who has dedicated nearly 33 years to this mission, reflects on the powerful legacy of his late grandmother, Elsie Wise, who inspired him to guide troubled teens in the neighborhood. Wise founded the West Powelton Steppers and Drum Squad to provide a constructive outlet for local youth, particularly in an area lacking recreational activities. Her vision was to create a safe space for children to channel their energy positively. The drumline continues to practice at Paul Robeson High School, fostering a sense of community and belonging among its members. In 2012, a pivotal moment arrived when the 76ers recognized the talent of the West Powelton Steppers, making them the official drumline for the team. This partnership has not only elevated the group's profile but has also transformed Mapp's life, allowing him to impact the lives of the young drummers significantly. Mapp remains committed to his mission, stating, "I'm going to continue the journey and continue to do what you set forth to do to save this community to save these kids." The drumline, known as the Sixers Stixers, continues to play a vital role in promoting positivity and unity in Philadelphia.
