Armed school officers are now a tragic necessity after boys shot in Oroville

On December 4, 2024, two boys were shot at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, and are currently in critical condition. The shooting prompted California Assemblyman Bill Essayli to introduce AB 68, a bill that would require armed school resource officers at every school in the state. This proposal came quickly after the incident, which raised significant concerns about student safety in schools. Essayli emphasized the need for urgent action to protect children, stating that elected officials have a duty to safeguard the most vulnerable members of society, particularly children. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco echoed this sentiment, suggesting that a quicker response might have been possible with the presence of a school resource officer. This legislative proposal follows a previous attempt to mandate armed officers in schools, known as AB 3038, which did not garner sufficient support and was ultimately killed in the Assembly Education Committee earlier in April of the same year.
