Shein Clothing Contaminated with Toxic Chemicals

Authorities in Seoul have raised alarms over toxic substances found in women's accessories sold by major online retailers, including Shein, Temu, and AliExpress. A recent inspection revealed that 144 products from these companies contained harmful chemicals at levels significantly exceeding legal limits. The findings highlight a growing concern regarding the safety of affordable fashion items that have gained immense popularity worldwide. Among the alarming results, shoes from Shein were discovered to have phthalates—chemicals that enhance plastic flexibility—at levels 229 times above the legal threshold. Additionally, formaldehyde was detected in Shein's caps at double the permissible limit. Two nail polish bottles from the same retailer contained dioxane, a potential carcinogen, at over 3.6 times the allowed level, alongside methanol concentrations exceeding acceptable limits by 1.4 times. In response to these findings, Shein stated that they collaborate with international third-party testing agencies to ensure compliance with safety standards. However, Seoul officials have urged the immediate removal of these hazardous products from the market, emphasizing the risks associated with items that come into direct contact with the body, such as sandals and hats. The European Union has also taken note of these concerns, recently adding Shein to a list of digital firms subject to stricter safety regulations aimed at protecting consumers, particularly minors, from unsafe products. The situation underscores the need for increased scrutiny of fast fashion and its implications for public health.
