AeroShield revolutionizes window technology with energy-efficient entry doors
- AeroShield has developed transparent aerogel glass insulation for full-size entry doors.
- Their breakthrough insulation technology offers superior thermal efficiency and transparency compared to conventional materials.
- The collaboration with ODL aims to commercialize these products and significantly impact energy savings for homeowners.
In a significant development for energy-efficient construction, AeroShield Materials announced a breakthrough in aerogel insulation technology on March 20, 2025, in Waltham, Massachusetts. The company achieved the production of transparent, super-insulating aerogel insulated glass designed specifically for full-size entry doors, marking a first in the industry. This innovative product stands out as it is not only more transparent than traditional glass but also offers twice the insulation performance of the inert gases typically used in double-pane insulating glass. This advancement promises to enhance the thermal efficiency of residential windows and doors without added thickness or weight, making them more appealing for homeowners. The partnership with ODL, known for their expertise in advanced engineering and innovative solutions in the window and door market, is pivotal for the commercialization of AeroShield's aerogel glass insulation. ODL displayed the aerogel-insulated units at the 2025 NAHB International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Las Vegas, showcasing the practicality of this breakthrough technology to tens of thousands of attendees. Dr. Elise Strobach, CEO of AeroShield, acknowledged the collaboration, stating that their aerogel insulation allows the final product to exceed ENERGY STAR performance targets, which is a significant milestone in energy efficiency for residential construction. Currently, the prototypes of aerogel-insulated patio and entry doors are undergoing performance testing, which will include various sizes and styles, such as the full-view 22” x 64” doorglass. These tests aim to support the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) certification for aerobic insulated products. This thorough testing process is essential for ensuring that the new product meets the rigorous standards expected in the market. Aaron Baskerville-Bridges, co-founder and vice president of operations at AeroShield, emphasized the importance of ODL's history of introducing innovative products to the market and their commitment to sustainability and quality. As the heating and cooling costs rise, especially in Northern climates, the introduction of this innovative energy-efficient door and window solution is poised to create significant savings for homeowners, translating into up to 20% reduced annual energy bills. By integrating this technologically advanced insulation into their products, ODL aims to enhance the quality and energy efficiency of their entry doors and doorglass offerings. The aerogel-insulated prototypes are anticipated to be commercially available by the end of 2026, setting a new standard for energy-efficient building materials and significantly impacting residential construction practices moving forward.
