Ocean advocates raise $1.8 million for conservation in NYC

On September 10, 2024, ocean advocates convened at the Mastercard Midnight Theatre in Manhattan for a fundraising event titled 'An Evening of Jazz,' aimed at supporting Oceana, the leading organization focused on ocean conservation. The event featured Oceana Board Member Ted Danson as the Master of Ceremonies, who highlighted the organization's significant achievements and introduced its new CEO, James Simon. Over the past decade, Oceana has raised nearly $18 million through its annual events in New York, contributing to various policy victories globally. During the event, Danson and fellow advocate Waterston discussed Oceana's successful campaign to persuade Amazon to replace plastic air pillows in their packaging with 100% recycled paper filler, a change expected to eliminate nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually. James Simon emphasized the urgent need to reduce plastic pollution, particularly single-use plastics, which are detrimental to marine ecosystems and human health. Oceana is also expanding its efforts to coastal nations like Ghana, Senegal, and Malaysia, where local communities depend on fish for their livelihoods. The organization aims to combat illegal and destructive fishing practices that threaten local fish populations. Dr. Christina Hicks, a new board member, addressed the challenges faced by West African fishers, including rising costs and scarcity of fish, and the need for policies that benefit local communities. The evening concluded with a performance by jazz artist Brian Newman and Rumer Willis, marking their first collaboration. Oceana's ongoing initiatives and partnerships, such as the Blancpain Ocean Commitment, continue to support scientific expeditions and promote ocean conservation efforts worldwide.
