Spain olive oil producers turn to stones for fuel amid rising costs

Spain's olive oil producers are increasingly utilizing olive stones as a fuel source due to soaring electricity costs exacerbated by the energy crisis following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This shift is particularly evident in the southern Andalusia region, where olive stones, a byproduct of olive oil production, are being refined and sold for domestic and industrial use. The industry has seen a rise in firms refining these stones, with 31 companies reported at the end of last year, up from 25 in 2020. The olive oil sector, which accounts for nearly half of the global output, is facing challenges such as fluctuating prices and a significant drop in demand, which has decreased by 40% recently. The price of olive pits has surged, reaching up to 400 euros per ton, more than double the price from the previous year. This increase in cost is attributed to a reduction in the availability of stones on the market. Producers are now focusing on maximizing the value of their crops, with olive stones being used not only for heating but also in the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). In 2022, this innovative approach allowed for the powering of over 200 flights from Seville airport, showcasing the potential of agricultural waste in decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors like aviation. The collaboration between olive oil producers and companies investing in biofuels highlights the industry's adaptability in the face of economic pressures. As the demand for sustainable energy sources grows, the olive oil sector is positioning itself as a key player in the transition towards greener energy solutions.
