Germany strengthens NATO presence by establishing brigade in Lithuania

In Lithuania, Chancellor Friedrich Merz inaugurated a new German brigade aimed at bolstering NATO's eastern defenses in response to ongoing concerns about Russian aggression. This inauguration represents a historic move, marking the first time since World War II that a German brigade has been stationed outside Germany on a long-term basis, with the brigade expected to reach full capacity of around 5,000 troops by the end of 2027. Lithuania's own commitment to defense spending is notable as it has announced plans to increase its defense budget to between 5% and 6% of GDP, making it one of the first NATO countries to aim for such a significant expenditure. During the inauguration ceremony, Merz emphasized that the security of Baltic allies is integral to Germany's own security, reinforcing the message that stability in the region is a shared responsibility among NATO members.
