Story

Yemen is historically recognized as the birthplace of coffee cultivation, where the coffee tree was first cultivated and roasted into a drink that quickly became popular. Over the centuries, coffee from Yemen was exported primarily through the port of Mokha, which played a crucial role in the spread of coffee culture to the Ottoman Empire and Europe. Presently, Qahwah House has opened its doors in Westbury, marking its first location on Long Island after operating in other parts of New York and Michigan. This café offers a unique experience by serving traditional Yemeni coffee, made with spices like cardamom and ginger, which enhances the flavor profile of the coffee. The preparation method involves grinding the beans and enduring a meticulous brewing process over gentle heat to fully extract the unique flavors, resulting in a delightful coffee experience for patrons. Qahwah House not only features traditional drinks but also blends contemporary options such as caramel macchiatos and nitro cold brews, aimed at diversifying their offerings to attract a broader audience. Patrons can enjoy accompanying pastries like khaliat al nahl, a honey-drizzled treat filled with cheese or sabaya, flaky buttery bread. The café's ambiance celebrates coffee’s rich history, including a large wooden map illustrating coffee's journey from Yemen to various parts of the world. Despite its historical significance in coffee production, today's Yemen only contributes a small percentage to the global coffee market. The irony remains that while coffee is famous worldwide, the most ordered beverage at Qahwah House is Adeni chai, highlighting the cafe's deep roots in Yemeni culture and its commitment to sharing this heritage with a modern audience.
