Story

The Mercury Prize organizers have announced that the winner of this year’s prestigious music award will be revealed on Thursday, September 5. A total of twelve albums by British and Irish artists have been shortlisted, including Charli XCX’s acclaimed album "Brat" and indie-rock band English Teacher’s "This Could Be Texas." The event will be filmed and broadcast live from the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London, with coverage on BBC Four from 8 PM to 9:15 PM. In addition to the televised event, BBC Radio 6 Music will provide a special broadcast hosted by Tom Ravenscroft and Deb Grant from 7 PM to 11 PM. The program will feature interviews with each of the twelve nominated artists, conducted by Matt Everitt, leading up to the announcement of the winner. Notable nominations this year include Corinne Bailey Rae, who received her first Mercury Prize nod in 14 years for her album "Black Rainbows," inspired by a Chicago exhibition on Black history. Additionally, Beth Gibbons of Portishead fame has earned her first solo nomination for "Lives Outgrown," a decade-long project exploring themes of motherhood and mortality. Last year’s Mercury Prize was awarded to the British jazz quintet Ezra Collective for their album "Where I’m Meant to Be." Recent winners also include Little Simz, Arlo Parks, Michael Kiwanuka, and Dave, showcasing a diverse range of musical talent in the UK and Ireland.
