On the 23rd anniversary of the murder of Gavin Brett, police in Newtownabbey have issued a renewed appeal for information regarding the tragic incident. The 18-year-old was shot dead on Hightown Road in Glengormley, County Antrim, while socializing with friends from both Catholic and Protestant backgrounds. Witnesses reported that a dark saloon-type car approached the group, and an occupant opened fire before fleeing the scene. Detective Chief Inspector Byrne described the attack as a "brutal and harrowing" act against an innocent young man. He noted that a second victim, also 18, sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle and required hospital treatment. Investigators believe that two gunmen were involved in the shooting, and they are particularly interested in a Vauxhall vehicle that was seen driving recklessly near the Sandyknowes Roundabout shortly before the attack. A day after the murder, a burnt-out dark blue Vauxhall Nova was discovered behind shops at Ballyearl Drive, New Mossley. DCI Byrne urged anyone who may have been in the Hollybrook Road area around the time of the shooting to come forward with any information, emphasizing that it is never too late to assist in the investigation. Gavin's father, Michael Brett, a paramedic who was nearby during the shooting, attempted to save his son but tragically passed away without seeing justice served for Gavin's murder. Gavin's mother has also made a heartfelt plea for information, hoping to find peace for her family.
