SEATTLE — The New York Mets welcomed back relief pitcher Reed Garrett on Saturday after he spent a month on the injured list due to swelling in his right elbow. In his return, Garrett showcased his potential by striking out all three batters he faced in a scoreless inning, despite the Mets ultimately losing 4-0 to the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. Manager Carlos Mendoza indicated that Garrett will initially be utilized in lower-pressure situations as he reintegrates into the lineup. Garrett's performance this season has been inconsistent, with a 3.64 ERA over 36 appearances, but he has demonstrated the ability to deliver high-velocity pitches, reaching up to 97 mph. To make room for Garrett on the roster, the Mets optioned left-handed pitcher Alex Young to Triple-A Syracuse, leaving Danny Young as the team's sole lefty reliever. Garrett's return follows two successful minor league rehab outings. The Mets have faced significant injury challenges this season, losing key pitchers such as Brooks Raley and Drew Smith to torn ulnar collateral ligaments. Additionally, starting pitchers Christian Scott and Kodai Senga are currently on the injured list, with Senga's calf strain expected to sideline him for the remainder of the regular season, although he may return if the Mets qualify for the playoffs. In other injury news, outfielder Starling Marte is set to continue his rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton after playing two games for Low-A St. Lucie last week.
