Counterfeit Apple power adapters pose electric shock risk

In a concerning investigation, a collaboration between Apple and the charity Electrical Safety First examined counterfeit and lookalike power adapters sold in the UK and EU. Out of 116 power adapters assessed, 22 samples were further analyzed, revealing that a significant majority—68%—contained metal weights. These weights are intended to mimic the heft of genuine Apple adapters but compromise the internal safety features that protect users from electric shock. Specifically, they interfere with electrical separation within the adapters, resulting in dangerous voltage levels that could expose consumers to harm. Notably, the investigation highlighted that these counterfeit products often bore Apple’s trademarks or jingled the genuine design, making them deceptively appealing to consumers seeking bargains. This clever manipulation by counterfeiters aims to mislead shoppers into believing they are purchasing high-quality products. In addition, a separate test revealed that the structural integrity of these adapters was alarmingly poor, with 71% of the plug pins failing during strength assessments. The potential risks associated with these counterfeit devices have prompted warnings from experts about their safety. The compromised design of these adapters could result in electric shocks or even fires, leaving consumers vulnerable. Luke Osborne, the deputy technical director at Electrical Safety First, stated that consumers must remain vigilant against these dangerous impersonations while shopping, emphasizing the importance of purchasing electronics from reputable retailers to avoid such hazards. This investigation serves as a critical reminder of the lengths to which counterfeiters go to deceive consumers, endangering their safety without any regard.
