Story

In a tragic incident in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, a local man, Ashley Taylor, has expressed his devastation after police shot and killed his two dogs while responding to an unrelated arrest warrant. On July 30, Taylor, 35, voluntarily surrendered to authorities for burglary charges, leaving his Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Lotus, and American Bulldog, Prince, secured in his home. Upon his return the following day, he discovered a scene of horror, with blood, bullet holes, and cartridge casings throughout the house, alongside one of his dogs' collars. South Yorkshire Police justified the shooting, claiming the dogs were believed to be an "unregistered XL Bully and a pit bull type" and were deemed "aggressive." They stated that the animals were destroyed "humanely." However, Taylor, who referred to his pets as his "kids," expressed confusion and heartbreak over the decision, emphasizing the emotional bond he shared with them. "They just took them away like that," he lamented. Witnesses in the Woodhouse area reported a heavy police presence during the incident, with multiple vehicles on the scene. Neighbor Ryan Smith recounted how officers were unable to enter the property due to the dogs' presence, prompting him to offer assistance. Taylor described the aftermath of the police action, noting the extensive damage and bloodshed in his home. As of now, the bodies of Lotus and Prince have not been returned to Taylor, and he remains without access to his property. South Yorkshire Police confirmed they responded to a disturbance at the location earlier that day.
